Firmware
Software that runs on devices such as scanners to ensure they function optimally.
What is firmware?
Firmware is the software permanently built into a device that controls its basic functions. Unlike regular software that users install themselves, firmware is deeply embedded in the hardware. For devices such as industrial scanners, printers, and IoT sensors, the firmware determines how the device communicates with other systems, how it processes data, and how it responds to input.
How does firmware work?
Firmware is written onto a chip in the device during manufacturing and forms the layer between the hardware and the software running on it. It initializes the hardware components at startup and provides the basic instructions for the device to function. Firmware updates are released by manufacturers to fix bugs, patch security vulnerabilities, or add new features. Wabber manages firmware updates centrally through our MDM platform, ensuring all devices always run on the latest version.
Example
An event organization uses 50 Wabber scanners for visitor registration with the Digitaal Aanmelden system. The manufacturer releases a firmware update that improves scan speed and patches a security vulnerability. Through the MDM platform, Wabber rolls out the update overnight to all 50 scanners, without a technician having to visit each device manually. The next morning, all scanners are running the improved firmware.
Why is firmware management important?
Outdated firmware can lead to compatibility issues, security risks, and reduced performance. Central firmware management through an MDM platform saves the IT department significant work: updates are rolled out remotely to all devices at once. This is especially valuable for organizations with large numbers of scanners or other devices spread across multiple locations.

Frequently asked questions
How often should firmware be updated?
The frequency of firmware updates varies by device and manufacturer. Security updates should be installed as soon as possible, while feature updates can be planned. Wabber monitors firmware releases for all managed devices and advises when an update is necessary.
What is the difference between firmware and software?
Firmware is permanently built into the device and controls the basic hardware functions. Software is installed on top of the firmware and provides the applications users work with. Firmware is updated less frequently than software and typically requires a specific update process from the manufacturer.
Can Wabber perform firmware updates remotely?
Yes, through our MDM platform, firmware updates are rolled out remotely to all managed devices. This can be scheduled outside working hours to minimize disruption. After the update, the platform automatically checks whether each device has been successfully updated and reports any issues.
